20th International Conference on Solid State Ionics (SSI-20)

Abstract

The lnten1ational Conference on Solid State Ionics (SSl-20), held every \VO years, is the flagship event attended by researchers Vorldwide. As such, it was the perfect opportunity to expand the field by promoting sy11ergistic exchange Vith researchers in other fields and by fostering the grovlh of emerging young scientists. !n1portantly, 2015 represented the first tin1e in 12 years that the conference Vas held in the United States. This 20th iteration of the ineeting represented a crucial opportunity for US participants, particularly students, to engage with the broader international electrochemistry and ionic-materials com1nunity. SSl-20 attracted a broad and diYerse international attendance Vi th 1nore than 600 university, govcmn1ent, and industrial pa11icipants. As in previous SS! n1eetings, a large nun1ber of European and Asian (especially Japan and Korea) colleagues did attend. Keeping with the broad, cross-cutting philosophy of this conference, presentations, posters, and discussion sections focused on a vide array of ionic n1aterials, ionic transport and e!ectrocheinic<tl kinetic funda1nentals, and ionic-based technologies. The Conference pro ided an informal at1nosphere for researchers to share exciting ideas, initiate nev collaborations, and advance the state-of-the-art. ARO support for the conference Vas key in enabling travel funding for graduate students and younger scientists to attend and participate in this conference and to facilitate a dialogue a1nong top experts and younger entrants in the field through poster sessions. Approxi1nately 700 abstract<; Vere sub1nitted to SSl-20 Vith a broad range of international submissions: 130 from USA, 120 froin Japan, 62 from Gennany, 50 from Korea, 50 fro1n China; and approximately 50% of the attendants Vere students and post-doctorates, 30% were professors, IO Y,, Vere fro1n National Labs, and the re1naining 10% were fron1 industry. The five days of the conference saV high quality presentations and vigorous discussion on the latest inaterials, characterization, and 111odeling deve!opn1ents for a broad spectn1m of solid-state ionic materials. devices, and phenomena. A selection of the many presentations at the conference Vas published in a special issue of Solid State Ionics (Solid State Ionics 288, 1, 2016).
