Parsing the New Chemistry of Methanol and Formic Acid Oxidation Reactions on Pt-based Electrocatalysts by in situ Spectroelectrochemistry and Density Functional Theory Calculations

Abstract

The objective of this effort is to understand the mechanisms for methanol and formic oxidation and the mechanisms for electrocatalyst poisoning caused by reaction-generated CO. This effort will (1) synthesize PtRu, PtPb, and other Pt-based electrocatalysts characterize them electrochemically, (2) study the electronic alterations of the electrocatalysts surface by in situ Pt/C/Pb EC-NMR, (3) identify reaction intermediates using in situ SEIRAS and/or SERS, and (4) perform density functional theory (DFT) calculations informed by the experimental measurements and vice versa.
