Accelerated STEM Program of Study and Leadership Development

Abstract

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is proposing a three-year research and development project with the United States Army (Army) to measure the impact of a rigorous accelerated STEM program of study and socialemotional learning in a military academy setting on the future college and career readiness of students from underrepresented groups and underserved communities. Through this proposal, CPS requests funding for a two-part project to develop generalizable approaches for an Accelerated STEM Program of Study and Leadership Development Program at the High School level. CPS and its research partner, University of Chicagoƕs Urban Education Lab, will measure the effects of these programs on the academic and socialemotional development of students. CPS will collect and assess empirical data to test the theory that access to these pilot programs will result in positive impacts on the college- and career-readiness of students as measured by various test scores, grades in specific courses, survey results, and college acceptance rates. Furthermore, it is the expectation of this project that participating students will demonstrate an increased preparedness and qualification for careers in Army STEM fields. This pilot will provide a model for other school districts to replicate in order to achieve broader STEM college and career preparedness from underrepresented communities
