The 8th International Spatial Socio-Cultural Knowledge Workshop
Abstract
The Spatial Socio-Cultural Knowledge Conference Workshop gathers UK, US and other international experts and practitioners from defence, academia, OGDs and NGOs to strive for improvements in the delivery and employment of spatially-enabled geographical and socio-cultural analysis in developing understanding of the human domain. The 2013 and 2014 themes were ÔHuman Geography for Decision SupportÕ and ÔHuman Geography - Challenging the Status Quo Through Better Use of InformationÕ, with a focus on utility in the fields of stabilization and disaster response. FOCUS: In 2015 the Workshop theme is focused on Defence Regional Engagement , to establish an understanding of the role of human geography in enabling and supporting understanding within that context. The potential for future workshops and collaborative partnerships to focus on specific thematic and/or regional challenges will also be considered. GOAL: The goal of the 2015 workshop is to engage with policy makers, academics, practitioners and end-users in the spatial socio-cultural area and in other fields involved in Defence Regional Engagement to develop a collective understanding of the requirements for successful Defence Engagement activities from across the range of stakeholders. OBJECTIVE: The objective is to present information and ideas and to raise questions which will assist attendees understand the key challenges facing those involved in Defence Engagement. The 8th Spatial Socio-Cultural Knowledge Workshop provides attendees with an opportunity to deliver presentations and participate in discussions and debates on: ¥ The collection, organisation and sharing of the data, models and analytical outputs that will help us develop an understanding of the implications of applying human geography to engagement activities. ¥ The integration and application of spatially-empowered analysis and decision support tools across disciplines and scales of activity (strategic to tactical), to identify the gaps and target audiences for future engagement. ¥ The development of best practice use cases in order to promote and stimulate concept and capability development. These topics will be addressed through a combination of plenary speakers and extended breakout sessions. The plenary sessions will be oriented toward specific Workshop topics, and will be composed of both academic and practitioner presentations. The breakout sessions provide opportunities for facilitated discussion to develop ideas from the plenary presentations and allow multiple perspectives to be considered. Breakouts will be focused on specific questions dealing with understanding the human domainÕs impact on engagement through regional, organizational, technical, functional, and practical considerations.
