Incoherent LED Pulse Laser for High-Speed Imaging and Optical Metrology

Abstract

The funds are requested for acquiring instrumentation to aid failure characterization aspects of the current Army Project of the PI, as well as future research relevant to the Army. Specifically, (i) a high energy incoherent pulsed laser light source suitable for capturing blur-free digital images of stress and deformation fields in the vicinity of a rapidly evolving damage or a growing crack, (ii) a low capacity load cell (50 N) to study deformation of polymer soft tissue simulants is requested. The PI plans to use the variation in a plate thickness due to the hydrostatic stress and the light deflection as it passes through the plate, to identify the magnitude of the local stress. This technique could be very useful for future research of complex static and dynamic stress states. Permission
