An Integrated System for Automating Artificial Metalloenzyme Evolution
Abstract
The Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP) is designed to improve the capabilities of U.S. Universities to conduct research and to educate scientists and engineers in selected technical areas of importance to national defense. DURIP funding provides for the acquisition of research equipment and instrumentation for this purpose. This proposal is for the purchase of a plate handling robot, associated plate storage, and integration with existing equipment in the Lewis lab. This system will facilitate, standardize, and in some cases uniquely enable, the research goal of evolving artificial metalloenzymes to catalyze reactions in cells and living organisms that are currently limited to the confines of flasks and reactors. The P.I., Professor Jared Lewis of the University of Chicago, will use the equipment to augment and enhance research capabilities related to the engineering of artificial metalloenzymes to provide novel capabilities for chemical synthesis to the Army.
