Instrument Development for a Long-Range, High-Resolution 3D Imaging Photon Counting LADAR

Abstract

The Defense University Research Instnnncntation Progra111 (DUR.IP) is designed to i111prove the capabilities of U.S. Universities to conduct research and to educate scientists and engineers in selected technical areas of i1nportance to national defense. DURIP funding provides for the acquisition of research cquipn1cnt and instnuncntation for this purpose. This proposal is for acquisition ofco1nponcnts for a Photon Counting (PC) LADAH. systen1 with polari1nctry. PC LADAR alhnvs for thrcc-dilnensional i1naging in signal starved cnviron1ncnts Vhcre con1parable analog systcn1s would fail; polarization in1aging provides scattering properties of target for contrast discri1nination between the target and background; therefore, this fully integrated systen1 will expand the rc1note sensing capability to pcrfon11111ultispectral-polari111ctric LAD AR i1naging. Design, develop1nent, and integration arc to be done by the PI and students, thus providing a rich learning cnviron1ncnt, as well as, dcvelop1ncnt of a unique research systen1 that 1nay be utilized for new opportunities for educational progra1ns and D()D relevant research.
