Mathematic and the Quest for Fundamental Principles of Biology
Abstract
This workshop seeks to bring together experts in wide-ranging areas of mathematical biology with the purpose of determining the areas of biology most likely to produce fundamental principles and the most feasible ways in which to go about their discovery. The meeting will take place over 1.5 days, involve experts in numerous, diverse, and encompassing areas of mathematical biology, and be organized to combine open-ended discussion with focused writing. In preparation the participants will come with three specific unifying future directions for the field and present those as "lightning talks" on the morning of the first day. The remainder of the morning will be a full group discussion to combine, hone, and organize these ideas, and the participants will self-organize into smaller groups for lunch and the early afternoon. These groups will report back in the late afternoon, with the goal of coming up with specific areas for preparation of white papers, and an outline of the overview paper. The evening will encourage wide-ranging discussions in a more social setting, and the second day will consolidate efforts and lay out next steps with clear responsibilities and timelines.
