Data Stethoscope for the Brain Connectome

Abstract

The objective of this proposal is to develop an interactive 3D video-gaming tool that will enable novel visualization methods for exploring brain connectome data. The approach of this proposal is to use multi-modal representation, combining interactive visualization with data sonification, to develop new data exploration tools. The proposer plans to leverage data aimed at understanding how patterns of brain connections change over the lifespan to build a multi-modal 3D interactive tool that will enable data exploration in an unprecedented manner by making multi-sensory Ògame levelsÓ derived directly from large functional magnetic resonance imaging data sets. Once the initial model for the data set of a single subject is in place, the possibility to examine, by sensory experience, the differences, blending and mixing of all ages across the data set will provide the explorer/investigator ample opportunity to find patterns and differences across the entire matrix of the data set as presented in this navigable context. The proposer also plans to evaluate the tool to a second data set provided by DARPA. To achieve this latter aim, particular emphasis will be placed on incorporating generalizable data formats and a user interface that provides opportunities for others to upload their own data into the tool for data exploration.
