Fulldome Development for Interactive Immersive Training Capabilities

Abstract

The Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) proposes a research and educational initiative in computer programming, virtual, and immersive technology. The project will work to develop science programs in the context of a Native American Art College and develop students ability to take part in science, application development and programming interactivity and simulation in environments with computational thinking by creatives. During a previous DOD grant the college hosted development of simulation and interactivity in the Fulldome, 3D simulation, animation and sculpting. IAIA is now at the forefront with interactivity and simulation in the emerging fulldome and immersive technology for educational applications and increased training capabilities. This project will directly feed into a research base in support of national defense: Virtual Simulation and Immersive Environments— while also supporting the STEM educational needs of our Native American student body. The proposed research project will build on prior successful research to deliver true interactive immersive displays. During the last three years, IAIA and UNM partnered on a DOD project entitled “Fulldome Development for Interactive Immersive Training Capabilities” (Proposal #60458-CS-REP), which supported the research and development of interactive technology for fulldome theaters as well as an educational and production workflow for fulldome project development. Prior research projects succeeded in developing technology and tools for interactive fulldome development and visualization. Research advancements included: 1) vDome, a real-time fulldome projection system designed for interactive workflows; 2) Imagebased rendering for the dome: generating photorealistic images without having to simulate complex light transport phenomena; 3) Interactivity in the fulldome.
