A hardware computer server system that provides a secure computing resource on which DOD classified projects will be executed
Abstract
ARO: Dr. Brian Rivera (Information Sciences) A thrust area within the Virginia Tech (VT) Hume Center is Data-to-Decision (D2D) [in addition to Electronic & Cyber Warfare, Wireless Communications, Signal Analysis]. D2D is designed to support DoD programs by developing and applying multi-INT search and analysis of Big Data in DoD applications areas such as tipping/cueing, situational awareness, event/activity detection, and data fusion. The core technology of D2D is a general unstructured search engine capable of searching, associating, and data fusion within/across data in multi-INT data sets (image, video, audio, communications, IoT sensor data, cyber network traffic, and unstructured text). This core technology provides support for command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) and counter-C4ISR. The VT search engine, called MISE (Multi-INT Search Engine), is designed to provide the basis for this processing platform. MISE is massively parallelized Big Data platform that makes use of HyperTable/Accumulo, Hadoop&MapReduce, HDFS. The proposed dual server and workstation hardware system purchase associated with this proposal will support two computing configurations: one classified server for computing and data analysis of collateral information in Virginia Tech s secure facilities and one server for processing unclassified and ITAR protected data. Each server is a multi-core Intel architecture with terabytes of attached disk storage. This system will be dedicated to the research and execution of the DoD projects described below in the ÒCurrently Funded Research, Projects and ProposalsÓ in the areas of electronic warfare, cyber network/mission assurance, and ISR video/image tipping/cueing search. The system will be used by cleared Hume MTS (Members of the Technical Staff) and graduate students. The MISE not only provides a valuable unstructured search, linking, data fusion tool, but also provides the basis for a teaching platform for students to learn and apply leading-edge software technologies for Big Data processing.
