2016 Multifunctional Materials and Structures: Science of Autonomic, Adaptive and Self-Sustaining Systems GRC

Abstract

The technical objective of the proposed effort is to support a unique forum for the discussion of emerging scientific opportunities and breakthroughs in the area of multifunctional materials. The proposal requests support for a Gordon Research Conference on the topic of multifunctional materials and structures. The proposed forum will bring together researchers from mechanics, materials science, engineering, physics, chemistry and biology to discuss recent accomplishments and strategic directions in the emerging science of autonomic, adaptive and self-sustaining systems. More specifically, the topic area includes materials, structures and materials systems that have the ability to perform multiple functions through judicious combination of structural properties and at least one additional functional capability. The proposed conference will focus on the topics of: sensing and self-diagnosis; self-healing, remodeling and regeneration; modeling and simulation; self-cooling and thermal management; self-powered systems; adaptive materials; actuation and morphing; multifunctional design optimization; and processing and manufacturing. The conference will also provide a detailed discussion and assessment of recent scientific opportunities in the areas of: translation of model biological functions to synthetic materials; accelerated transport and dynamic chemical changes in strong, stiff materials; optimizing interfaces between hard and soft materials; and physics-based modeling of multi-component systems. The proposed Gordon Research Conference has been organized to bring together academic scholars, government researchers and planners, industry practitioners, and young researchers to assess the state-of-the-art and advance it through robust and detailed discussions.
