Improving HBCU STEM Outcomes by Addressing Student and Faculty Barriers to Engagement and Participation with the Department of Defence

Abstract

To increase the number of African American STEM degree holders, TMCF submits the following Proposal for Army Research Laboratory-Army Research Office (ARL-ARO) consideration in response to the Broad Agency Announcement for Basic and Applied Scientific Research (Solicitation Number W911NF-12-R-0012-03). Specifically, TMCFÕs Proposal is intended to respond to following aims/goals detailed in the BAAÕs Research Area 11 (ARO Special Programs): (1) Enhance HBCU/MI programs and capabilities in scientific and engineering disciplines critical to the national security functions of the DoD (2) Encourage greater participation by HBCU/MIs in DoD programs and activities (3) Increase the number of graduates, including underrepresented minorities, in the fields of science, technology, engineering and/or mathematics (STEM), and (4) Encourage research and educational collaborations In order to assist the above-delineated goals and objectives, TMCF proposes a very focused and targeted intervention that directs program funds to just five activities: (1) scholarships; (2) student internships; (3) faculty summer research; (4) community outreach/awareness workshops; and (5) Army employment branding and recruitment.
