Abstract
The Spatial Socio-Cultural Knowledge Workshop gathers UK, US and other international experts and practitioners from defence, academia, OGDs and NGOs to seek improvements in the delivery and use of geographical and socio-cultural analysis in developing an understanding of the human domain. The 2015 theme was ÔDefence Regional Engagement Ð The Role of Human Geography in Enabling Defence EngagementÕ. FOCUS: In 2016 we will continue to develop the theme of Human Geography in Defence Engagement and provide a bridge in the workshop agenda to the Culture in Conflict event (running 25-27 May 2016) which follows themes of common interest such as Cultural Property Protection. GOAL: The goal of the 2016 workshop is to engage with policy makers, academics, practitioners and end-users involved in Defence Regional Engagement and the underpinning spatial and cultural analysis. OBJECTIVES: The 9th Workshop provides attendees with an opportunity to deliver presentations and participate in discussions on: ¥ The collection, organisation and sharing of the data, models and analytical outputs that will help us advance our understanding of the implications of human geography and its associated cultural factors for informing engagement activities. ¥ The development of best practices and case studies in order to promote enhanced research practice and to stimulate capability development. These topics will be addressed through a combination of plenary speakers and breakout sessions. The plenary sessions will be oriented toward specific Workshop topics and will be composed of both academic and practitioner presentations. The breakout sessions provide opportunities for facilitated discussion that will be focused on specific questions dealing with understanding the human domainÕs impact on engagement through regional, organizational, technical, functional, and practical considerations.
