The Physics of Mud

Abstract

We are developing a suite of unprecedented experiments for this project, that aim to address the following primary objectives: 1. Understand the contribution of inter-particle cohesion to emergent mud rheology; 2. Determine the controls of fluid shear (turbulence) on the formation and breakup of mud aggregates; 3. Utilize results from (1) and (2) to probe and predict erosion and deposition of mud in natural landscapes; 4. Develop an integrated training program for a PhD student and postdoc, at the interface of materials science and geophysics.
