Tungsten/Molybdenum Alloy Investigation of Potential Manganese Effect

Abstract

The purpose of this project is to investigate the effects of systematic additions of manganese to i) pure tungsten, ii) pure molybdenum, and iii) molybdenum Ð tungsten alloys in order to investigate any Ôrhenium effectÕ as manganese is in the same group in the periodic table, and has a very similar outer electronic structure, as technetium and rhenium. This work may also result in a new high density tungsten alloys that have microstructural instabilities or lower thermal conductivity which would improve the penetration efficiency of tungsten penetrators. The alloy samples will be manufactured by standard powder metallurgy techniques. Among possible characterization methods, SEM/EDAX and microhardness tests are the most relevant.
