2016 Bioinspired Materials Gordon Research Conference and Gordon Research Seminar
Abstract
The technical objective of the proposed effort is to support a unique forum for the discussion of emerging scientific opportunities and breakthroughs at the intersections of directed self-assembly, hierarchical organization of natural occurring materials, and bioinspired artificial materials. The proposal requests support for both a Gordon Research Conference and a Gordon Research Seminar on the topic ofbioinspired materials. The technical focus of these coordinated meetings includes the mechanics of biological materials, biointerfaces and applications, bioinspired devices, peptide mimetics, bioinspired synthetic polymers, bioinspired assemblies, and adaptive design of materials. The proposed conference seeks to bring together expert researchers from the fields of biochemistry, chemistry, materials science, engineering and bioengineering to promote cross-disciplinary fertilization of ideas, define new directions, and create a cohesive community between junior scientists with prominent senior investigators. This Bioinspired Materials GRC is unique within the scientific community as the sole regularly occurring international conference solely devoted to bioinspired materials. In response to feedback from the previous (2014) GRC, the conference support request seeks to enhance female, international, and junior faculty participation, and to target particularly timely emerging opportunities in bioin pired devices and the mechanics of biological materials. The proposed Gordon Research Seminar, specifically targeting junior participants (students and post-docs), will consist of a 1.5 day event before the main conference, and will provide introductory lectures, an opportunity for short talks in a peer-only environment, as well as a mentorship component. The request also specifically targets support (registration and travel) for the participation of female and junior participants.
