Cross-Cultural Decision Making to Advance Understanding of Human Aspects of the Operational Environment

Abstract

The purpose of this project is to convene a panel university experts working on the topic of cross-cultural decision making, which will be held at the 5th International Conference on Cross-Cultural Decision-Making, held in conjunction with the 7th Annual Applied Human Factors & Ergonomics Conference. The panel will address critical decision-making dynamics related to conflict and collaboration in military setings and addresses cutting-edge issues relevant to the DoD s Community of Interest on Human Aspects of Operation sin Military Environments. Attendance is estimated to be over 100 academics, practitioners, DoD scientists, and policymakers enabling a unique opportunity for technical change of information. The proposal is innovative in the range of coverage it gives to the domain of cross-cultural decision-making: from micro-level interactions at the dyadic level, to cross-national interactions; utilizing data from a wide variety of sources, including surveys, archival data, social media, and sociophysiological measures. A call to university researchers known to ARO and ARL scientists who are experts in the domain of cross-cultural research was made, and from this call 6 panelists were selected and agreed to participate, covering micro-to-macro topics in cross-cultural decision making. Their abstracts have been accepted by the panel organizers. The line-up includes: Victor Asal (University of Maryland, College Park): ÒWhy Some Groups Kill, Why Some Groups DonÕt & Why Target Civilians: An Exploration of Choices of Violence" Eric Burger & Clare Sullivan (Georgetown University): ÒEstonian E-Residency Initiative: Impact of EstoniaÕs Start-Up Culture on Decisions Related to Prudence & Good GovernanceÓ ¥ Regnin Firat (Georgia State University), Ethan M. Rogers (University of Iowa, Hye Won Kwon (University of Iowa), Steven Hitlin (University of Iowa): "Cultural Consistency & Variation in Moral Boundaries Governing Decision-Making & Interaction: Measuring Group Values" ¥ Huan Liu (Arizona State University): "Trust & Distrust Relations across Cross-Cultural Interaction in Social Media Domains" ¥ David Melamed (The Ohio State University): ÒCulturally Invariant Status Processes in Operational Environments Involving Decision-Making" ¥ Dawn Robinson (University of Georgia) & Lynn Smith-Lovin (Duke University): "New Models for On-the-Fly Simulations of Cross-Cultural Interactions" Each presentation will be published in the conference proceedings enabling a broad dissemination of the research.
