2016 Quantum Science Gordon Research Conference
Abstract
The overall objective of this proposal is to hold a Gordon Research Conference focused on the field of quantum science. The conference is structured in order to bring together ~50 leading scientists plus additional researchers including postdocs and graduate students to brainstorm a range of cutting-edge topics related to the broad scientific discipline of quantum science, touching on quantum information processing, quantum simulation, quantum limited metrology, and hybrid quantum systems. A Gordon Research Seminar will also be held at the same location two days prior to the Gordon Research Conference. The seminar will be student focused, have two student co-chairs, and concentrate on the interaction between students and practicing scientists in quantum science fields. The proposed approach is to hold the 2016 Gordon Research Conference/Gordon Research Seminar at the Stonehill College in Easton Massachusetts. The technical portion of the program will consist of five evening sessions and four morning sessions. The evening sessions will feature one discussion leader and two invited speakers each, while the morning sessions will have one discussion leader and three invited speakers each. The following topics will be covered: Quantum information & condensed matter; many-body entanglement and dynamics; quantum simulations; quantum computation algorithm and error corrections; quantum information with high energy and general relativity; quantum metrology, sensing, and other areas (chemistry/biology); strongly interacting photons; cavity QED with real and artificial atoms; optomechanics/hybrid systems; and connections between quantum coherence and thermodynamic resources. Additionally, the structure of the Gordon Conference is such that it promotes interaction between meeting participants. The afternoon hours are free for one-on-one or small group discussions, the relatively remote site ensures that the attendees will focus on the science and their colleagues without distraction, and the housing accommodations are dormitory style to promote a true sense of community amongst the researchers. The conference will be held July 31 Ð August 5, 2016 with the seminar being held two days prior, July 30 Ð 31, 2016.
