Broader Engagement and Learning at SIAM CSE17

Abstract

The objective of this proposal is to extend classroom learning to a scientific professional conference (SIAM CSE17) and to increase the participation of students from underrepresented and privileged backgrounds in mathematics, modeling, and computational science and engineering. Held in conjunction with SIAM CSE17 and taking advantage of the conference s technical sessions, Dr. Leung will lead career and professional development activities for participants funded through the Broader Engagement program and mentors. Funded participants will be recruited from professional associations and institutional contacts, with recruitment targeting women, underrepresented minorities, people with disabilities and people from under-privileged backgrounds. The project will use guided conference activities to expand and strengthen STEM learning and engagement and increase the likelihood of persistence; examples of guided activities include 1) Preparing students to attend a technical session, attending the session with the students, then holding a discussion after the session; 2) Facilitating a poster judging session to teach students best practices for discussion and visual presentation of research; 3) Facilitating a modeling, programming and/or problem-solving challenge. The project outcomes will be published in a project reports and peer-reviewed journal(s) and/or presented at a scientific conference. A project website will also provide information about the program to the public.
