Acquisition of a Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer and an EcoSEC GPC for Polymer and Materials Characterization

Abstract

The FY 2016 DoD HBCU/MI Research and Education Program Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) solicited proposals from single investigators at HBCUs and MIs for the acquisition equipment and instrumentation in scientific areas important to one or more the three defense research offices, namely: Army Research Office (ARO); Office of Naval Research (ONR); and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR). All equipment/instrument grant awards made under this program will have a 12-month performance period. This proposal requests support for the acquisition of Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer (DMA) and Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) systems to support the research infrastructure at Savannah State University. The requested instrumentation offers the ability to conduct molecular weight characterization and thermal analysis of polymeric materials. More specifically, these systems will provide useful information regarding polymer molecular weight, polydispersity, glass transition temperatures, melting behavior, thermal stability, polymer content, kinetics of decomposition processes, tensile strength, scratch and shear resistance, stress/strain properties and viscoelasticity to determine areas of applications.
