Acquisition of Equipment to Study the Toxicology and Translational Genomics of Nanoparticle Exposure for Research, Education and Minority Training at MVSU
Abstract
The current production and application of synthetic nanoparticles (NPs) has led to a growing interest in potentially adverse environmental, health and safety consequences of increased NP exposure and burden within the biosphere. We seek Department of Defense (DoD) support for the acquisition of equipment necessary to establish a complete workflow for toxicology and translational genomics for bacterial cultures, eukaryotic in vitro cell line models, and in vivo fish models, for research and education on the health and safety of engineered NPs. The research and education we propose is essential for the DoD and consistent with the Defense Nanotechnology Research and Development Program enacted in 2003, the 21st Century Nanotechnology Research and Development Act of 2003, and the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) established in 2001. Mississippi Valley State University is a Òpart BÓ HBCU as defined in section 322(2) of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C. 1061(2)), is located in the Mississippi Delta. The establishment of molecular laboratory capabilities will expand research and educational opportunities for the Natural Sciences and Environmental Health (NSEH) department, and increase collaboration with the MVSU multi-disciplinary Bioinformatics program in molecular biology, computer science and mathematics. Through research and educational training of masterÕs students, we will strengthen our educational bridge to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) doctoral programs. Additionally, the equipment requested from the DoD will increase the NSEH departmentÕs leverage in recruiting community college graduates and high school students seeking STEM-related four-year degrees. The equipment requested will be located in the Natural Science Research DepartmentÕs 52,000 square foot Science and Technology Building that was opened in 2009.
