Acquisition of Big Data Analytics Instruments for Research and Education in Big Military Data Intelligence at PVAMU
Abstract
Today s military analysts are faced with the monumental and escalating task of handling massive volumes of complex data from multiple sources. To enhance their ability to more effectively and efficiently process data, a multidisciplinary team of researchers from Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) have established the Center of excellence in Research and Education for big military Data Intelligence (CREDIT). The center s mission is to accelerate research and education in predictive analytics for science and engineering to transform our ability to effectively address and solve many complex problems posed by big data. In this project, researchers from the CREDIT center propose to build a military big data testbed consisting primarily of cloud computing platforms for predictive big data analytics as well as testing and verification of theoretical results. The proposed testbed will enhance existing research and education activities for mission-critical big data processing at PVAMU. The equipment consists of two major components: - Cray Urika-XA Extreme Analytics System for advanced big data processing and predictive analysis - LCD2 video wall system for visualization of massive military datasets interactively on big screen The acquisition and development of the proposed testbed will allow us to further enhance our existing research in big data analytics, create new projects and interactions among ourselves and our students. It will greatly strengthen and broaden big data research activity at PVAMU, complementing the existing apparatus for big data processing within the CREDIT center and biomedical big data processing in the Computational Biology Lab, and foster collaborations with research groups from other institutions. Specifically, it will help provide students, especially underrepresented groups, to obtain unique hands-on experience and expertise in the theory and practice of an entire range of experimental cloud computing and big data processing techniques, where training of highly skilled personnel is critical to DOD missions.
