Plasma Advanced Materials and Energy Systems Laboratory (PAMES)
Abstract
The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year (FY) 2016, under authority of 10 U.S.C. ¤ 2362 and the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (OASD(R&E)), allocated $28 million to assist Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority-Serving Institutions (HBCU/MI) with equipment and instrumentation enhancements to improve their research and education capabilities in scientific disciplines important to the defense mission. The program aims enhance the capacity of HBCU/MI to participate broadly in defense research programs and activities and to increase the number of graduates, including underrepresented minorities, in fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This proposal seeks support for the acquisition of equipment/instrumentation for the ÒPlasma Advanced Materials and Energy Systems LaboratoryÓ (PAMES) at California State University-Fresno. The proposed items for infrastructural and basic scientific equipment enhancements include: Ion Implantation Systems, Sputter/Thin Films Deposition systems, Corona Discharge System, Plasma Diagnostics Equipment and Materials Characterization Systems. This acquisition will enable state-of-the-art research with broad applications to DoD scientific interests. These systems will be utilized in undergraduate and graduate education by integrating them in existing courses and new courses. Under the guidance of the faculty, undergraduate and graduate students in several disciplines will perform interdisciplinary research at PAMES Laboratory. The acquisition will enhance and develop infrastructure in several areas, namely: plasma processing; material synthesis; materials characterization; development of materials towards advanced energy systems and other potential plasma engineering applications to health and environment fields of relevance to DoD. Furthermore, the laboratory will establish infrastructure towards undergraduate/graduate education and research work at the intersection of plasma engineering, materials science and energy systems.
