Acquisition of Hyperspectral Imaging and Multispectral Imaging Devices for the Enhancement of Research and Education at Alcorn State University

Abstract

The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year (FY) 2016, under authority of 10 U.S.C. ยค 2362 and the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (OASD(R&E)), allocated $28 million to assist Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority-Serving Institutions (HBCU/MI) with equipment and instrumentation enhancements to improve their research and education capabilities in scientific disciplines important to the defense mission. The program aims enhance the capacity of HBCU/MI to participate broadly in defense research programs and activities and to increase the number of graduates, including underrepresented minorities, in fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). With this award from the DOD Research and Education Program (HBCU/MI) Equipment/Instrumentation, Alcorn State University (ASU) will acquire a set of hyperspectral imaging and multispectral imaging devices. This acquisition includes a hyperspectral camera and a midwave infrared camera. The acquisition will provide training to undergraduate and graduate students in the use of this advanced imaging tool for pattern recognition. It will strengthen research opportunities in the area of image analysis and pattern recognition using hyperspectral and multispectral images at ASU. ASU is currently equipped with the following enterprise-level imaging devices: digital camera (visible band), near infrared camera, and longwave infrared camera. This acquisition will complement our current multispectral imaging capability meanwhile add new capabilities in hyperspectral imaging. The acquisition is aimed at enhancing research and education at all levels, especially in areas such as (a) studying multispectral image fusion, night vision enhancement, and pattern recognition; (b) developing object detection and recognition applications using hyperspectral images; (c) educating and training students about advanced spectral imaging and pattern analysis. Students will gain excellent experience through the funded project by involving related research and training activities. Research and education seminars will invite college students, and high school students who will be encouraged to enter college majoring in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields related with national defense.
