Refugee Flows and Instability

Abstract

Our project proposal outlined the following goals for the first 6 months of the project. Next to each goal, I provide an indicator of the percentage completion of that task alongside an explanation for any delay: :: PI planning and preparation. 100% completed. We hired two PhD students at the University of Arizona, Tiffany Chu and Huan Zhang. :: IRB processing (Work Package 2). 100% completed. The first round of surveys are currently being carried out in Lebanon. The human subjects approval for the survey instrument was approved through both University of Arizona and ARO in March 2017. :: Collate existing refugee data (WP1). 100% completed. We completed a survey of (we hope) *all* existing sources of refugee flow data available to cover the period 1990 to 2016. We will continue to update this resource. We have also created a global, dyadic dataset of UNHCR data covering all origin and destination countries globally between 1990 and 2016. These data will be used to facilitate the initial round of analyses in work package 3. :: Consultation with UNHCR. 33% completed. We have carried out discussions with UNHCR representatives in Lebanon. We are planning on establish connections with representatives in Geneva, London, New York, and Washington DC once we have more results to report. :: Preparation of survey instrument (WP2). 100% completed. The survey instrument was designed and piloted in the field by April 2017. The survey is now in the field. As of July 31, 2017, we had collected 1700 of our targeted 2400 survey responses amongst Lebanese residents. :: Initial analysis of existing refugee data (WP3). 0% completed. We have experienced delays in our sub award contracting with UCL such that we have had to delay the hiring of the post-Doc and PhD student in London until September 2017. Both positions are now advertised. Once appointed, we will begin the process of analysis of existing data.
