SBP 2017-2019 Conference Sponsorship Grant Proposal
Abstract
Social computing and behavioral modeling lie at the intersection of various disciplines such as sociology, behavioral science, psychology, anthropology, mathematics, economics, computer science, information systems, physics, health sciences, and operations research. Research in social computing and behavioral modeling is designed to achieve a better understanding of social interactions, complex behaviors, contextual patterns, and associated outcomes of interest. The state-of-the-art in this field requires an interdisciplinary set of skills to address challenges arising from health, culture, and society. Further, the rapid growth of the Internet and the sheer volume of data being generated on daily basis by millions of online users on disparate issues provide a significant opportunity for discovery through an intelligent mining and analysis of the big data. Such an intelligent analysis calls for a collaborative effort between mathematicians, computer scientists, statisticians and social scientists on one hand, and with domain specific experts, such as health professionals, economists, and security experts. The Social Computing, Behavioral-Cultural Modeling, and Prediction (SBP) conference is a platform for bringing together researchers from a wide variety of disciplines in this rapidly developing area of research to interact, discuss and disseminate on research issues that are central to its progress and to encourage new collaborations that are essential to its steady development and healthy evolution. AROÕs support over the past years helped partially cover the costs of keynote and tutorial speakers that furthered our goal of making the conference truly interdisciplinary and attract early career researchers. With enhanced support from ARO, we intend to build upon the successful strategies and during the next three years, we aim to (1) further grow the conference and (2) increase avenues to encourage participation from gender, ethnic, racial, and disciplinary minorities. The conferences SBP17, SBP18, and SBP19 will follow the successful format of SBP16, evolved from the experience and feedback obtained in the previous yearsÕ meetings, i.e., SBP08 through SBP15. SBP is a highly interdisciplinary conference that offers a rare and exciting opportunity for behavioral and social science researchers to come together with computational scientists and other related disciplines. SBP provides opportunities for training, professional development, and community building via keynote presentations, tutorials, paper and poster presentations, challenge session, and cross-fertilization roundtable session. SBP conference offers an opportunity for researchers from behavioral and social science to come together with researchers from mathematics and computational sciences and other related disciplines and seeks to attract graduate students, practitioners, and program staff from federal agencies. Such a confluence of scientists including established and emerging researchers from different streams creates an operational environment that allows better understanding of the contributions from each individual discipline, forging joint interdisciplinary efforts. This conference is uniquely placed to achieve these goals and to promote this emerging area by providing a platform that researchers can use to disseminate and discuss the results from relevant, promoting the growth of this high-impact research area.
