Enhancing Student Participation at the NetSci 2017 Conference

Abstract

The goal of this project is to enhance student participation at the 2017 International School and Conference on Network Science (NetSci) conference, held in Indianapolis (netsci2017.net), hosted and organized by the Indiana University Network Science Institute (iuni.iu.edu). NetSci is the world-leading conference that brings together researchers and practitioners working in the emerging area of network science. Network science is a relatively new area of science that aims to understand the emerging properties of complex, disordered, highly interconnected systems and how these depend upon, and are reflected in the complex patterns of interactions among the elementary constituents of the system. Network science is an inherently interdisciplinary field, and supports applications relevant to ARO, as outlined under Research Area 10 of the present BAA. The NetSci conference has a strong tradition of encouraging the participation of students and young researchers, and one of its major focuses is on dissemination and didactic activities. There is growing interest toward network science among young researchers --- a generation that has grown up with a deep appreciation for the value of social networks mediated by online environments. In turn, strong participation of young researchers in NetSci creates opportunities to broaden exposure to research problems and opportunities of relevance not only to science but also to DoD. ARO support will enhance student participation by enabling (1) heavily discounted registration fees for all students attending the conference; (2) full conference fee waivers to at least 25 graduate students; and (3) additional travel awards to 10 of those students. These awards are granted on a competitive basis.
