2017 Atomic Physics Gordon Research Conference & Gordon Research Seminar

Abstract

The twenty-third Atomic Physics Gordon Research Conference will be held at Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island from June 11 to June 16, 2017. We expect close to 200 participants, the majority of whom will be young researchers. This meeting will continue the tradition of focusing on emerging areas of research within our discipline and major advances in atomic physics and related fields. The areas to be addressed at this conference include both theoretical and experimental developments, with emphasis on areas that offer significant challenges and opportunities as we look to the future of our field. The 2017 conference session themes include quantum networks, computation, and simulation, quantum optics, quantum degenerate gases, cold molecules, trapped ions, few- and many-body physics, precision measurements, atomic clocks, and tests of fundamental laws of nature. The research nature of the Gordon conferences offers a unique opportunity for all participants to exchange ideas and start new projects and collaborations, in particular involving researchers from different subfields. For the first time, we will also organize the Gordon Research Seminar, Hybrid Atomic Systems in the Quantum Regime, on June 10 - 11, 2017, just before the start of the conference. The entire GRS program, including oral and poster sessions, is presented by students and young researchers. We envision that the GRS experience will help young investigators to establish professional networks among their peers and acquire a stronger foundation as well as a broader perspective of cutting-edge Atomic Physics research, which will be highly beneficial to their future careers. It is proposed that ARO assist with the expenses of the 2017 Gordon Research Conference and Seminar on Atomic Physics through a grant to support conference expenses of attendees, in part to encourage the participation of researchers funded by ARO. The Gordon Conference on Atomic Physics has a 30-year tradition of communicating and stimulating the most exciting new research in atomic, molecular, and optical physics Ñ and in related areas. Such work has a significant connection to current priorities of the U.S. Army Research Office Quantum Information Science program to understand, control, and exploit exotic quantum phenomena for revolutionary advances in sensing, metrology computation and secure communication.
