SUPPORT FOR THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE BOSE-EINSTEIN CONDENSATION 2017

Abstract

This proposal is in support of the international conference "Bose-Einstein Condensation 2017 Ð Frontiers in Quantum Gases", that will be held from September 2nd to 8th, 2017 in Spain, Sant Feliu de Gu’xols, in Hotel Eden Rock. The conference is hosted by ICFO Ð Institute for Photonic Sciences in Castelldefels and by DQMP Ð Department of Quantum Matter Physics, University of Geneva. The "Bose-Einstein Condensation" conferences are the most important ones for the physics community in the area of ultracold gases. The series began in 1993 and continues since then at the rhythm of one conference every second year. The event gathers 200 participants from all over the world in a unique mix of senior and junior, experimental and theoretical scientists. Since the 1995 discovery of the Bose-Einstein condensation in dilute ultracold gases by Cornell, Ketterle, and Wieman, the field of quantum gases has developed very rapidly in fascinating directions, many of which were not anticipated at the time of this discovery. Spectacular progress both in experiment and theory has lead to quantitative many-body physics, establishing a fruitful interface between condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, and high energy physics. The Nobel Prize winners Eric Cornell, Wolfgang Ketterle and William D. Phillips have already accepted to speak at BEC 2017. The International Scientific Committee, which includes these 3 Nobel laureates, has decided in 2007 that the conference series would take place regularly in Sant Feliu de Gu’xols (Girona). The program of the conference includes typically 45 oral presentations (invited and hot topics), and at the current stage of the program 17 invited speakers from the US have confirmed their participation. The details of the program will soon be available on the web site of the conference: http://www.bec2017.org. The US Air Force and Army support is needed in order to ensure the participation of a large and diverse group of senior and young invited speakers, and, in particular, to help foster the exchange of scientific information among young scientists. It will be used to support the costs of invited speakers, of the venue, and for younger participants. More generally, this support will contribute to a number of areas vital to science and technology in the US and in Europe.
