OPTICAL CHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL SENSORS

Abstract

We have received financial support to organize a session focusing on Optical Chemical and Biological Sensors at the OSA Sensors meeting that was held at Astor Crowne Plaza, New Orleans, Louisiana from 24th to 27th of July 2017. The financial support from ARO was used to support travel and registration costs of the invited speakers and the session organizers. Optical sensors have many applications in R&D, national defense and commercial markets such as medical diagnostics and process control. But because of the breadth of applications for optical sensors, the challenges to the design and functioning of an optical sensor for a particular application requires knowledge of optical, material, and environmental properties that affect sensor performance. SENSORS addresses all aspects of optical sensors from source and detection technologies, sensor configurations, and processing approaches to applications. These optical sensors range from micro-probes to large devices used for standoff monitoring of industrial and environmental species. The meeting included oral and poster presentations. A significant fraction of the time was dedicated for discussion and networking to identify the most critical issues that need to be addressed in the field.
