24th International Workshop on Oxide Electronics

Abstract

The Project Abstract shall include a statement of objectives, methods to be employed, and the significance of the proposed activity to the advancement of knowledge or education. Avoid use of the first person to complete this summary. DO NOT EXCEED ONE PAGE. The abstract should be suitable for release under the Freedom of Information Act, 5 U.S.C. 552, as amended. Transition metal oxides (TMO) present both tremendous opportunities and challenges in future electronic technologies utilizing them as the principal materials platform. As the DoD recognizes the importance of TMOs to next-generation device technologies, advancing an understanding on both fundamental structure-property relationships, which require optimization to achieve high-performance and or multifunctional (a material that responds to more than one conjugate field, for example), and materials integration avenues is of utmost important. The project will partially support the 24th Annual International Workshop on Oxide Electronics (IWOE-24) planned for September 24-27, 2017, in Chicago, IL, USA. It is the premier meeting focused on recent advances and emerging trends in the field of multifunctional complex oxides and their utilization in electronic devices. This workshop will address interdisciplinary topics such as neuromorphic computation; ionic and electrochemical modification of electronic materials; nonequilbirum states and optical control; and oxide integration into energy technologies and electronics. Covering the broad intellectual ground needed to support the utilization of functional oxides in a variety of devices, the workshop provides an holistic program, including materials design and theory, synthesis, characterization, and device design and performance. The scope of the workshop, thus, brings together advances in fundamental materials physics and applied breakthroughs in device fabrication and operation. An anticipated outcome is the formation of new research collaborations and the identification of emerging scientific opportunities for DoD over the next decade, which will be disseminated in written form.
