Unpacking the Nature of Team Resilience and the Role of Leadership: Looking Across Levels
Abstract
The complex and dynamic environments in which a contemporary Solider operates reveals the importance of resilience as an essential characteristic for mission accomplishment. Soldiers must have the Òmental, physical, emotional, and behavioral ability to face and cope with adversity, adapt to change, recover, learn and grow from setbacks.Ó Until recently, research on resiliency has primarily investigated the individual Soldier, despite the salience of teams in the military. Consequently, there is presently a large gap in our understanding of resilience in regards to teams. Furthermore, our understanding on the factors that facilitate team resilience in terms of leadership is equally not understood. In order to shed light on leader and team resilience, we will conduct both quantitative and qualitative reviews to identify individual and team characteristics that facilitate resilience, gain insights into how leaders can facilitate unit resiliency, refinement of a multi-level model of team resilience, and where possible identify profiles that are indicative of individual and team resilience. If successful, these efforts can directly inform assignment, training, and promotion programs in regards to resilience.
