Scalable, single step melt processing of anion exchange membranes

Abstract

The objectives of the STIR program are to support rapid, short-term investigations to assess the merit of innovative new concepts in basic research. Here, the project s goal was to perform continuous, solvent-free melt processing of commercially available polymers with stable cations to create engineered, large area anion exchange membranes. Two research paths were explored in parallel: 1. Melt process commercial chlorinated polymer to create large, thin films; and 2. Melt process commercial chlorinated polymer simultaneously with a stable cation to create anion exchange membranes. New membranes were created and tested.
