Acquisition of Instruments to Develop and Characterize Patterned Micron-Sizes Thermochromic Vanadium Dioxide to Study the Size and Edge Effect on Semiconductor-Metal Transition Characteristics
Abstract
The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year (FY) 2017, under authority of 10 U.S.C. ยค 2362 and the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (OASD(R&E)), allocated $21.0 million to assist Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority-Serving Institutions (HBCU/MI) with equipment and instrumentation enhancements to improve their research and education capabilities in scientific disciplines important to the defense mission. The program aims to enhance the capacity of HBCU/MI to participate broadly in defense research programs and activities and to increase the number of graduates, including underrepresented minorities, in fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This instrumentation grant is requested to acquire (i) a Mask Aligner for photolithography, (ii) Upgraded Filmetric F10-RT-UVX for thermochromic transition studies and (iii) a Stylus Profiler for control of thickness uniformity and size profile. These instruments will be used primarily to investigate the impact of samples size, shapes and edge terminations on the Semiconductor-Metal Transition (SMT) characteristics of thermochromic Vanadium Dioxide (VO2) thin films. They will be integral part of a materials research and education capability being developed at ECSU to foster interdisciplinary and collaborative research activities that are of interest to the Department of Defense. Requested instruments will be used for: (a) research by faculty, (b) research education and training of undergraduate students, and (c) outreach activities to local community colleges and high schools in the 21-county service area of ECSU, in the rural northeastern North Carolina.
