Full Waveform Inversion for Ground Penetrating Radar
Abstract
Ground penetrating radar systems have been successfully used in defense applications for the identification of structures or materials that are hidden underground. The first major goal of this research project is to formulate the electromagnetic operator 2D in time domain to obtain the modeled data. The selection of the forward operator depends on the parameters required in the inversion process which are permittivity, permeability and conductivity. Once the forward operator is selected, the second major goal is to obtain the mathematical formulations for the inverse process. The parameter estimation process requires the formulation of an adjoint operator, in order to obtain the backward propagating field. This field has as source the error between the modeled and observed data, in reverse time. With the forward field and the backward field we can obtain the gradient required to update the model for each parameter. We propose to use different models to test the parameter estimation formulation. We will use synthetic models with characteristics similar to real underground models, in spatial dimensions, material parameters, time step, number of iterations and number of sources. The next major goal is to implement the forward and adjoint operator using FDTD on multiple Graphics Processing Units to accelerate the execution time. Once the tool has been validated with synthetic data, the last major goal is to apply the proposed methodology in real data. However, it is necessary new stages to process and condition the data in the inversion process. In order to test the proposed parameter estimation formulation with real data, the radiations patterns of the antennas should be characterized, such that the physical pattern is included in the forward model such that the difference between the observed and modeled data is reduced.
