Partial Support of the National Academy of Sciences Board on Behavioral, Cognitive, and Sensory Sciences 20th Anniversary Symposium.

Abstract

The Board on Behavioral, Cognitive and Sensory Sciences (BBCSS) at The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine acknowledged its 20th anniversary on October 19, 2017 by hosting a special research symposium. It was held at the historic National Academy of Sciences building in Washington, DC on Constitution Avenue and brought together scientists, policymakers, and others from the behavioral sciences community for an event highlighting the importance and the future of the behavioral sciences while acknowledging the diverse contributions that BBCSS has made to the field. The afternoon event featured: ¥ A special conversation with David Brooks, New York Times and Daniel Gilbert, Harvard University; ¥ Insights from the nationÕs top scientists (young scholars as well as senior) on new discoveries in the behavioral sciences with a look into the future; and ¥ Sessions on the impacts and application of the behavioral sciences to some of our nationÕs most pressing problems. The primary value of this meeting was to convene established senior scientists with more junior counterparts so that a vision for the future of the behavioral sciences is developed for the next decade. Insights into the future of the behavioral sciences being developed in the academic laboratories may help funding agencies devise their own research agendas. The human sciences are important in many, if not all, areas of government action. Some presentations addressed application of the behavioral sciences to important issues facing the nation in health, safety, and the workforce. Gathering a community of scientists and scientific stakeholders enabled dialogue that was intellectually stimulating and creative.
