Symposium on Heterogeneous Functional Materials for Energy Conversion and Storage

Abstract

The proposed project will organize a symposium on "Heterogeneous Functional Materials for Energy Conversion and Storage". This symposium will be held during the 223rd Meeting of the Electrochemical Society (ECS) at the Seattle Sheraton and Washington State Convention Center in Seattle, WA during at May 13-17, 2018. Heterogeneous functional materials (HeteroFoaMs) are pervasive in electrochemical devices. These devices consist of multiple materials combined at multiple scales (from atomic to macro) that electrocatalytically react and transport electroactive species during their functional history in a manner that controls their collective performance as a system at the global level. The objective of the symposium will be to provide a forum to discuss the science that controls emergent properties in heterogeneous functional materials as a foundation for design of functional material devices with performance not bounded by constituent properties. This symposium will bring together scientists and engineers across various disciplines to address future challenges in this area. This symposium will provide a setting to catalyze cross-disciplinary collaborations to enable important scientific and technological breakthroughs for our society. The symposium will consist of three invited talks along with contributed presentations over at least three technical sessions. The invited speakers will be prominent scientists in their discipline. Invited talks are intended to brief researchers in the latest development in heterogeneous functional materials, and to inspire symposium participants in new research directions and collaboration. The symposium will reimburse the travel expenses of the invited speakers. The symposium will be organized by Wilson K.S. Chiu (University of Connecticut), Fanglin (Frank) Chen (University of South Carolina), Deryn Chu (U.S. Army Research Laboratory), Andrew Herring (Colorado School of Mines), Srikanth Gopalan (Boston University), Torsten Markus (Mannheim University), and Patrick J. Masset (Fraunhofer UMSICHT). Abstracts of all presentations will be published as part of the ECS meeting. All authors accepted for presentation are invited to submit their full text manuscript to an issue of ECS Transactions planned to be published after the meeting.
