Lightwave electronics with zeptosecond hard x-rays

Abstract

We propose to develop a radically advanced laser driver delivering intense sub-2-cycle and CEP-stable 7-micron pulses to achieve the first source of coherent zeptosecond hard X-rays. The current proposal aims at implementing the laser driver with the clear prospect to generate coherent hard x-ray bursts short enough to access the universal 50-as response time of electronic wave packets and, hence, provide the first unclouded view at the interaction of extreme electro-magnetic radiation with matter as first step towards its manipulation and control.
