Conference Support for ESMC 2018 Mini-symposium on the Physics of dense granular media
Abstract
This conference proposal requests funds to support the travel costs and registration for 9 invited participants from the US to give talks in a mini-symposium entitled ÒPhysics of dense granular mediaÓ as a part of the 10th European Solid Mechanics Conference (ESMC) July 2-6, 2018 in Bologna, Italy. The ESMC series, which occurs every three years, is the premier conference for researchers in the vibrant solid mechanics and granular materials communities in Europe. ESMC 2018 will feature 54 mini-symposia spanning continuum mechanics, particulate media, metamaterials, and composites. The ÒPhysics of dense granular mediaÓ mini-symposium will be coorganized by the PI, Prof. Robert Behringer, and Prof. Lou Kondic, who are leaders in the fields of experimental and computational studies of granular media and have a strong history of collaboration and co-organizing conferences, workshops, and symposia. The mini-symposium will feature experimental, theoretical, and computational work from researchers in the US and European granular materials communities focused on the structural and mechanical properties of static granular packings, as well as the dynamics of slowly driven granular systems. Key topics will include static packings of non-spherical and entangled grains, preparation protocol dependence of the jamming transition, characterization of force chain networks, continuum descriptions of dense granular flows, shear thickening, fluid-driven granular beds, sediment transport, and geophysical flows. Many of these topics are directly related to the main goal of AROÕs Program on Earth Materials and Processes, which seeks to understand the dynamic and mechanical properties of near-surface Earth materials. The mini-symposium will feature 33 talks (thirty 20-minute talks and 3 keynote 40-minute talks) over three days. Each day will include 2 sessions (one in the morning and one in the afternoon), each lasting 2 hours. This proposal will provide funding for 9 invited US participants (6 faculty and 3 Ph.D. student/postdocs). Nine additional invited US participants will be funded from other sources. The remaining 15 speakers giving contributed talks will come from a list of prominent researchers in the European granular materials research community, who have expressed interest in attending ESMC 2018, as well as additional US participants who are reached through email and online postings. An important outcome of this conference will be a consensus of promising future research directions in dense granular media, which will be achieved through open discussions during the mini-symposium. The co-organizers will draft an article that summarizes new results from the mini-symposium, connects these results to problems in geophysics, and identifies future research directions and submit it as a ÒCommentaryÓ to the Journal of Geophysical Research Earth Surface.
