2018 Energetic Materials Gordon Research Conference Research Area 1.a.i: Chemical Sciences - (3) Molecular Structure and Dynamics (Dr. James K. Parker)
Abstract
This proposal requests support in the amount of $40.000 to be used to provide registration support of key participants, including but not limited to graduate students, post docs, women and other underrepresented minorities, attending the 2018 Gordon Research Conference Energetic Materials. The focus of this conference is current basic research in the broad field of energetic materials and covers topics ranging from novel synthesis and scale-up of new materials, advanced diagnostics and experimental techniques, nanoscale, non-crystalline and additively -manufactured energetic materials, and new theoretical methods and models for simulating the behavior of energetic materials, including detonation, ignition/initiation, sub-detonative response, and thermal decomposition. This area is particularly relevant to the objectives in energetic materials research programs supported by ARO, including those under the Molecular Structure und Dynamics and Propulsion Energetics programs which support experimental and theoretical research that will ultimately provide the basis for design of future propellants and explosives, as well as understanding of the dynamics of the planned and inadvertent ignition and subsequent combustion of energetic materials commonly used for propulsion in gun and missile systems and in ordinance . The discussion leaders and speakers have been chosen to cover many technical areas within energetic materials, and to include established leaders, including those from the Army Research Laboratory and the U.S. Army Armament, Research and Development Engineering Center, as well as emerging contributors to the field who have already demonstrated their excellence. The objective of the conference is to bring together leading scientists from the international community, as well as young researchers and students. This helps to build a network of scientists who can benefit from exposure to a wide range of subjects, all encompassed by this multi-disciplinary field. The discussion leaders and speakers have been chosen to cover many technical areas within energetic materials, and to include established leaders as well as emerging contributors to the field who have already demonstrated their excellence.
