Nanoscience Education Mini-track at FNANO18

Abstract

FNANO has no formal education track and has not historically has seminars about the process of education in nanoscience. As FNA NO s attendees are predominantly faculty, postdoctoral associates and graduate students, all of whom are involved in education, the creation of this track fills an unmet need. The track will have a poster session focused around nanoscience pedagogy and an invited speaker who will talk about effective programs or pedagogy in nanoscience. I propose the speaker for the mini -track in 2018 talk about course-based large-scale undergraduate research programs, exemplified by UT Austin s FRI,รก"Freshman Research Initiative" . FRI -like programs take large groups of undergraduates supervised by researcheducators - effectively teaching postdocs - and have them do research when they would normally be doing freshman and sophomore labs. These provide great advantages for the students, research groups and institutions, which will be described in the talks.
