Support for the 26th International Conference on Atomic Physics, ICAP 2018

Abstract

This proposal is in support of the "International Conference on Atomic Physics - ICAP 2018, that will be held from July 23rd to 27th, 2018 in Spain, Barcelona The conference is hosted by ICFO Ð The Institute of Photonic Sciences, University of Barcelona (UB), Universitat Aut˜noma the Barcelona (UAB) and Universitat PolitŽcnica de Barcelona (UPC). The "ICAP" conferences are held bi-annually since 1968 and are the most important conferences in atomic physics worldwide. They typically gather 600-800 researchers every second year in the last weeks of July of the even-numbered years. The conference does not have parallel sessions, but rather very high level plenary lectures, with an outstanding program of invited speakers, and the topics encompass forefront research subjects in the field of atomic physics. The conference is usually honored by the presence of several Nobel Prize laureates among the invited speakers, participants, or members of the scientific committee (for instance E. Cornell, W. Ketterle, T. Haensch, W. Phillips, S. Haroche, D. Wineland, C. Cohen-Tannoudji). Some of the most prominent researchers in atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) physics participate as well (A. Aspect, P. Zoller, M. Lukin, I. Cirac, D. Kleppner, A. Zeilinger, among others). The contributed papers are presented in active poster sessions. Following the tradition of previous ICAP conferences, the conference will include an outstanding program of invited speakers covering the most recent subjects in the field of atomic physics. This conference is unique in bringing together researchers from across all subjects in this area, and has a strong tradition in bringing together both senior scientists as well as young researchers from around the globe. Historically, ICAP conferences have played and continue to play the leading role in the development of modern atomic physics research. The US Air Force and Army support is needed in order to ensure the participation of a large and diverse group of senior and young invited speakers, and, in particular, to help foster the exchange of scientific information among young scientists. It will be used to support the costs of invited speakers and for younger participants. More generally, this support will contribute to a number of areas vital to science and technology in the US and in Europe.
