2018 Energetic Materials Gordon Research Seminar

Abstract

This is a proposal requesting support in the amount of $10,000 to provide support for the seminar registration fees for graduate students and post docs attending the 2018 Energetic Materials (EM) Gordon Research Seminar. The Gordon Research Seminar (ORS) on Energetic Materials is an early-career symposium for young scientists and aims to familiarize them with the advances and opportunities in this exciting research area. At the ORS, participants will share their emerging and innovative experimental and theoretical work. Discussions and collaborations formed by these early-career scientists can generate interdisciplinary research and new perspectives for the field. The works presented will highlight efforts by graduate students, post-doctoral researchers and early-career researchers. Talks at the conference will cover research in multiscale modeling of reactive materials, use of and developments in advanced diagnostics and experimental techniques, advances in EM synthesis, and new synthetic advances in nanoscale, non-crystalline or additively-manufacturcd explosives. These areas are particularly relevant to the research objectives in energetic materials programs supported by ARO including those under the Propulsion and Energetics and Molecular Structure and Dynamics programs which support experimental and theoretical research that will ultimately provide the basis for design of future propellants and explosives, as well as understanding of the dynamics of the planned and inadvertent ignition and subsequent combustion of energetic materials commonly used for propulsion in gun and missile systems and in ordinance. The discussion leaders and speakers will be chosen to cover many technical areas within energetic materials, and will include emerging student contributors to the field. This Gordon Research Seminar offers a unique chance for the development of the next generation of EM researchers. The conference allows for participants to meet and interact with their future colleagues, develop self-directed collaborations, and learn from one another. These interactions will be fostered through daily presentations from fellow graduate students, post-docs and early career scientists, a poster presentation, and an I d like to understand..." message board located in the poster area where questions can be asked, which will be continued in the full Gordon Research Conference (ORC). Students and post-docs will also have an opportunity lo learn about career opportunities within EM through a panel representing government laboratories, industry, and academic careers. Additionally, a panel of established researchers will select a few GRS participants (poster presenters and speakers) to give abbreviated talks during the full ORC, giving their research and capabilities visibility in the field.
