Social and Behavioral Science: Climate Control Rooms for Extending Research Capabilities at the UNCG Plant and Pollinator Center

Abstract

The Western Honey Bee (Apis mellifera) is a longstanding model for studying social behavior, including communication, swarm intelligence and social immunity. Studies of this species are also directly relevant for human food security because it is the most important pollinator of agricultural crops. The extension of UNCGÕs honey bee research program has led to the establishment of a novel UNCG Plant and Pollinator Center, which will provide critical on-site laboratory space. As part of this extension, we need climate-controlled chambers to conduct behavioral observations and other experiments under accurate external conditions. Thus, funds are requested for 2 such chambers and their installation. Two chambers are necessary because in disease, particularly virus, studies, healthy and diseased experimental set-ups need to be isolated but kept otherwise under identical conditions. This equipment will enhance research and training abilities of the Biology Department at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro for years to come.
