Non-Invasive, Polarmetric, Ultra-Wideband Electric Field Measurement System
Abstract
This proposal aims at increasing measurement capabilities, by acquiring a state-of-the-art field measurement system from EMAG Technologies. The field measurement system, known as NeoScan, is a non-invasive electric field measurement system that can be used to perform a wide range of RF, microwave, and millimeter-wave antennas and circuits over a wide range of frequencies with a wide dynamic range and unprecedented spatial resolution. NeoScan uses the principles of electro-optic field sampling and mapping to measure the electric field around the device under test (DUT). Specifically, NeoScan uses a very tiny field probe consisting of an electro-optic (EO) crystal mounted at the tip of an optical fiber. The probe head is made of a tiny all-dielectric materials smaller than 1mm ? 1mm ? 1mm. As a result, the probe is virtually transparent to the DUT and does not perturb the electric field at the location of signal pickup. In other words, the NeoScan probe is a non-contact probe that virtually exhibits an infinite impedance as seen by the DUT. NeoScan allows for non-invasive polarimetric field measurements with very fine spatial resolution. This resolution is comparable to the footprint of a focused laser beam (<100um). The EO crystal is anisotropic and can measure all three components of the complex electric field. Since the cutoff frequency of the EO crystal is typically in the Terahertz band, ultrawideband field measurements can be performed using just a single EO probe. This system is capable of radiation pattern/gain characterization of antennas with arbitrary 3-D structures and wide range of dimensions. The provision of a built-in near-field to far-field transformation for any arbitrary scanned surface makes the application of this system in any antenna lab very convenient. This system is also intended for diagnostic of active and passive RF circuits and EMC/EMI evaluations.
