Realising the Cultural and Human Dimension Symposium
Abstract
The Defence Geographic Centre, Cranfield University and Specialist Group Military Intelligence will be holding this symposium combining the 11th International Spatial Socio-Cultural Knowledge Workshop (SSKW), Culture in Conflict Conference, Cultural Heritage Protection, and wider cultural issues. The symposium will gather UK, US, other international experts, and practitioners from Defence, academia, OGDs, and NGOs. We will see to understand these issues through the application of spatial and temporal tools, social science analysis, cultural and social anthropology. The theme of the Symposium will include cultural and spatial perspectives on Human Geography for Defence and Humanitarian Engagement Activities, Regional Analysis: Russia, the Middle East, Horn of Africa, Migration and New Diasporas Ð emerging effects on transit countries and new settlements, people and environment (Cultural issues relating to Health, Climate, and Demographics), protection of Cultural Heritage and Information Sharing and the use of social media. The objectives to be achieved are to promote a shared situational awareness of people and their environment. Whilst also acknowledging the development of tradecraft, best practices and case studies in order to promote enhanced research practice in order to stimulate capability development and further understanding. The symposium will also identify the nature of cultural information and how it can be both identified, acquired, and retrieved. These topics will be addressed through a combination of Plenary discussions and workshop sessions. The workshop will provide opportunities for facilitated discussion focused on two subject areas.
