Workshop for the Emerging Trends in Nonlinear Optics
Abstract
The impact of nonlinear optics on science and technology is well understood. Examples of nonlinear optics applications include: - development of new light sources spanning the whole spectrum from UV to THz; - new material processing techniques; - new imaging and spectroscopic techniques such as multi-photon microscopy and laser-induced plasma spectroscopy; - new information technologies such as all-optical signal processing and soliton-based telecommunications. The most mature applications of nonlinear optics are based on bulky structures, therefore there is a need to realize efficient, yet small structure to replace them. Moreover, it is still not clear how these nonlinear processes are affected by either extremely high intensity values or extremely small volumes, i.e. at the nanoscale. The workshop will be focused on novel trends in nonlinear optics. Our goal is to bring together scientists from around the globe to exchange ideas on the most cutting edge research, brainstorm and identify novel trends in the field of nonlinear optics. We hope to provide a platform for potential new collaborations and an open, informal discussion on pre-publication research at the forefront in the field. We plan on having a three day agenda with sessions divided among these four topics: 1 -Extreme events: this session will include high harmonic generation, filamentation, rogue waves, solitons, etc. 2 - Nonlinear Nano-Plasmonics: this session will include harmonic generation and Kerr-like nonlinearities from nanofilms and nanoparticles, nonlocal and quantum effects, electron spill-out effects, nonlinear effects in metamaterials and metasurfaces etc. 3 - Nonlinear optics in low dimensional materials: this session will focus on harmonic generation and other nonlinear effects in graphene and other 2D-materials. 4 - Nonlinear optics in low-permittivity media: this session will include nonlinear opticsl phenomena in epsilon-near-zero materials and near-unity refractive index changes We stress that those topics are usually not represented in mainstream conferences.
