Electrospun Hollow Polymeric Nanoreactors as a Touchstone for Confinement Effects on Chemical Reactions
Abstract
Nanoreactors, vessels of volumes smaller than a nanoliter that can host a chemical reaction, have promising applications in pharmaceutical, energetics, and industrial chemistry. However, current understanding of the effects of confinement on the reaction characteristics is still lacking. To investigate these effects, we aim to develop polymeric Janus microtubes with controlled diameter and length, whose luminal walls will be modified with a single or with a group of enzymes. Using these microtubes, we will examine the effect of the lumenÕs volume and dimensions on confined enzyme catalyzed reactions. The confinement effects will be examined in the bulk and on the single reactor level, both on single reactions and on an enzyme cascade. If successful, the research will broaden our understanding of confined chemical reactions and will pave the way to optimizing the performance of nanoreactors.
