The Czech Republic - US Workshop on Artificial Intelligence
Abstract
The CzechÑUS Bilateral Workshop on Artificial Intelligence was held at the University of Maryland at College Park on September 18-19, 2018. The meeting on Artificial Intelligence was organized as part of a broader series of meetings designed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of US-Czech cooperation and foster collaboration, principally among academic institutions, in emerging areas of global security and shared military interest. The CzechÑUS Bilateral Workshop on Artificial Intelligence was held at the University of Maryland at College Park on September 18-19, 2018. The goal of the workshop on Artificial Intelligence was to bring together science and technology leaders from the United States and Czech AI communities to pursue the following goals: ¥ Assess each countryÕs research capabilities in Artificial Intelligence (AI); ¥ To project long-term needs of society, government, and industry addressable by AI; ¥ Clarify the national laws and international agreements governing AI research; ¥ Identify funding sources for bilateral collaboration in AI; and ¥ Celebrate 100 years of US-Czech diplomatic relations. It was hoped that this workshop stimulate our thinking about new technical problems, and scientific questions, emerging across the field of artificial intelligence and its applications---with the hope of finding areas of opportunity for US-Czech collaboration and exchange. The workshop agenda included keynote addresses and panel sessions aimed at new and emerging issues, in particular human-machine interaction, cybersecurity, and machine learning. Keynote speakers included Dr. Jason Matheny, Director of IARPA; Petr Somol, of the Czech Academy of Sciences and CISCO; and Subbarao Kambhampati, President of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence and Arizona State University. The workshop structure was designed to be highly interactive, borrowing structural elements from the Gordon Research Conference series, the TTI/Vanguard technology conferences and various proposersÕ days and technology workshops hosted by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). While the conference organizers are not keeping a formal score sheet, it is apparent in the past several months that several productive relationships are emerging from the discussions at the conference. Informal feedback from attendees have indicated positives such as funding of a seedling project by DARPA (by one of the PMs at the conference to one of the attendees), plans for submission of international collaboration proposals to the NSF, and continued interactions between government and non-government attendees about science and technology problems of shared interest. The conference organizers are planning a follow-up trip to Prague in early 2019.
